To do conversions for other px or pt values use the tool above.
There's no direct formula to convert px to pt. However, W3C provides us detail on how both of these units are related to the unit inches. We can use that to derive the formula to convert px to pt.
Relation of Pixel & Point with Inch:
1 inch = 96 px
1 inch = 72 pt
So based on the above relation of px and pt with inch, we can say that:
96 px = 72 pt
And, from the above equation we can derive the formula:
pt = px * (72/96)
Let's say you want to convert 16 px to pt. Using the above formula, we get;
pt = 16 * (72/96)
pt = 12
So, 16px = 12pt
Similarly, you can do other pixel to point conversions for different values using the formula above.
PX represents pixels, a screen-based measurement unit, whereas PT stands for points, a print-based measurement unit. The primary difference is the medium they are intended for: PX for screens and PT for print.
The choice between pt (points) and px (pixels) depends on the medium and purpose of your design. For digital designs like websites and apps, px is preferred as it relates to screen-based measurements. For print materials, pt is more suitable because it's a print-based measurement unit. Consider the platform and intended audience when making your decision.
PT, EM, and PX are units of measurement used in typography and web design. PT (points) is a unit traditionally used for print media, representing 1/72 of an inch. EM is a relative unit of measurement, where 1 EM is equal to the current font size; it allows for scalable and responsive design. PX (pixels) is a fixed-size unit used mainly for screen media, representing a single point of light or color on a display. Each unit serves a distinct purpose depending on the design context and medium.
Adobe Illustrator supports both "PT" (points) and "PX" (pixels) as units of measurement. Users can select and switch between them based on their project needs, be it for print (pt) or digital (px) designs.
Yes, in Photoshop you can easily switch between "PT" (points) and "PX" (pixels) by going to "Edit" > "Preferences" > "Units & Rulers" and selecting your desired unit of measurement. Alternatively, you can use our online calculator and do the conversion.
