How to Convert Pixels to Feet?

To convert pixels to feet, divide the pixels with PPI (Pixels Per Inch) and then divide that result by 12, as there are 12 inches in a foot.

Formula:

Feet = Pixels PPI × 1 12

As you can see in the formula above, converting px to feet involves understanding the resolution of the display or print medium, which is typically expressed in pixels per inch (PPI) or dots per inch (DPI).

Understanding PPI and DPI:

PPI: PPI measures the number of pixels in one inch of a digital screen or image. It tells you how densely packed the pixels are in a given space. Higher PPI means better screen or image quality.

DPI: DPI measures the number of dots in one inch of a printed document. Each dot represents a tiny spot of ink or toner. DPI is used to describe the resolution of printers and the detail and quality of the printed image.

Therefore, the number of pixels in a foot depends on the PPI. If the number of pixels per inch (PPI) is higher, then the number of pixels in a foot will also be higher.

Now that you have some idea about the PPI and DPI, below we have provided some common PPI values used in different scenarios. They should help you get started if you are unsure.

Common PPI Values by Use Case:

  • Web designing: 96 PPI (fixed)
  • Printing: 300 PPI
    • Large Banner or Billboard Printing: 50 PPI or lower (since it will be viewed from a distance lower PPI is fine)
    • Photographs & magazines: 300+ PPI (for clarity as it will be viewed up close)
    • Newspapers: 150 - 200 PPI
  • Graphics & images for web: 72 PPI (commonly used for web graphics)
  • Architects & Civil Engineers: 150-300 PPI (for detailed digital models and blueprints)
