How to Use PT to PX Converter?

Using our point to pixel conversion tool is pretty straightforward. Simply enter the point (pt) value that you want to convert in point box and the tool will convert pt into px and display in the adjacent pixels box. (No need to press any button, the tool does conversions instantly as you type!)

Our tool also works vice versa. Meaning, you can also do pixels to points conversions by entering (or changing) the value in pixel box and the tool will display the calculated pt value.

The Live Preview Feature: The tool also shows the live [sample text] preview of the values you convert, making designing a little more convenient for you.

What is the difference between Point(pt) and Pixel(px)?

The point and pixel are both absolute length units. However, the pixel is a relatively newer unit, whereas the point unit's history dates back to the 1500s. A time when even computers were not invented!

At that time, fonts were mainly measured on paper, and the point was the only unit used for it.

But as computers and smartphones launched, the use of point as a unit to measure the font size became irrelevant.

That's because 1pt = 0.352 millimeters, and that fixed physical size of the point did not go well with modern computing devices and smartphones with different size screens and varying resolutions.

So for digital, the pixel is the unit used to measure font size.

But that does not mean that points are completely irrelevant now that we live in the digital age.

Word processing apps like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, etc., still use the point as the default unit for fonts mainly because people take out physical printouts of documents created in those software. Moreover, it's still one of the widely used units in print design.

To conclude, the pixel is the unit used to measure the size of fonts digitally, whereas, for physical font size measurements like for printouts, the point is the unit used.

How to convert PT to PX?

There's no direct formula available to convert points to pixels. So, we derive it by understanding the relation of point and pixel with the inch unit, which is pretty well defined by W3C.

Formula derivation to convert pt to px:

According to the world wide web consortium, 1pt = 1/72 inch and 1px = 1/96 inch.

Writing this in a simpler way for better understanding: 1 inch = 72pt and 1 inch = 96px

Now if you remember a little bit of school maths, from the above relation we can say that 72pt = 96px. Yes?

So from the above equation (72pt = 96px), we can derive the formula to convert pt to px as;

px = pt * (96/72)

Example Calculation:

Let's say you want to convert 10pt to px. Using the above formula, we get;

px = 10 * (96/72)

px = 13.33

So, 10pt = 13.33px

Similarly, you can do other pt to pixel conversions for different values using the formula above.

Why use this Points to Pixels Converter?

As you can see, the formula to convert point to px is not that complex. But it's not that easy either. You need to do a lot of calculations to get the result.

This PT to PX converter does calculations using the same formula and allows you to do conversions in much fast and easy way than doing this calculation manually.

FAQs:

How many pixels is a pt?

1pt is equal to approximately 1.33 pixels. For example, if you have a font set to 12pt, it would be approximately equivalent to 16 pixels.

Is 1pt the same as 1px?

1pt is not the same as 1px. The point unit is mainly used in print design with a fixed size of approximately 0.352mm. On the other hand, the pixel unit is primarily used in digital design and does not have a fixed size, as it depends on the resolution and screen size of the device.

How many mm is 1 pt font?

1pt is approximately equal to 0.3528mm. This conversion factor helps determine the physical dimensions of a font when considering specific print or design requirements.
